Materials/Supplies/Equipment:
2 yds. Color #1 (for top) Straight pins
2 yds. Color #2 (for bottom) Marking substance (erasable)
Batting – 1 piece 45" X 72", 1 piece 19" X 19" Ruler or other straightedge
Hand sewing needle & thimble Thread
Embroidery floss (optional) Scissors
Sewing machine Fabric for pillow top & bottom
Square up two-yard lengths of fabric to match each other. Make sure batting is
45" X 72" (same as top & bottom). Cut pillow top & bottom to
19" each or piece designs of your choice the same measurement.
NOTE: The finished pillow pocket must not be smaller than 16" to fit the
quilt body.
Place batting for pillow on a flat surface. Place Color #2 (bottom of pillow)
RIGHT SIDE UP on the batting. Place Color #1 (top of pillow) RIGHT SIDE DOWN on
top of Color #2. Pin the fabric to the batting leaving a 6-8" opening on
one side to turn pillow. Keeping the batting down and using ½" seam, start
sewing at one side of the opening backstitching at the beginning and sewing all
the way around the pillow until you reach the other side of the opening and
backstitch again. Trim any uneven edges and corners diagonally. Turn pillow
right side out pushing out corner points. Hand stitch opening together. Machine
quilt a simple pattern at the center of the pillow or tie all layers together in
several places with the floss to keep batting from shifting.
Place the larger piece of batting on a flat surface. Place Color #2 (bottom of
quilt) RIGHT SIDE UP on the batting. Place Color #1 (top of quilt) RIGHT SIDE
DOWN on top of Color #2. Pin all layers together making sure there are no
wrinkles or puckers leaving a 10-12" opening on one side to turn quilt.
Keeping the batting down and using ½" seam, start sewing at one end of the
opening backstitching at the beginning and sewing all the way around the pillow
until you reach the other side of the opening and backstitch again. Trim any
uneven edges and corner diagonally. Turn quilt right side out pushing out corner
points. Hand stitch opening together.
Place quilt on a flat surface with Color #2 (bottom) facing up. Center the
pillow flush against one end of the quilt with Color #2 (bottom) facing up. Pin
the pillow to the quilt. Sew ¼" seams around the pillow leaving the bottom
or inside seam open backstitching at beginning and end of seam.
You may either choose to machine quilt a large pattern throughout the quilt
portion of your quillow or tie in multiple places with all strands of embroidery
floss.
NOTE: Again, make sure there are no folds, puckers or wrinkles in the body of
the quilt. If machine quilting, use even feed or walking foot.
FOLDING YOUR FINISHED QUILLOW: Place the quilt on a flat surface with the pillow
on the bottom. Fold the quilt into thirds lapping the outside edges one over the
other. Pull the bottom of the pillow pocket up & over the lapped folds. Fold
the lapped portion of the quilt into thirds. Grasp the farthest fold and stuff
it inside the pillow pocket as far as it will go. If folded properly, the entire
quilt appears to the casual eye as nothing more than a pillow and will serve
both functions: quilt & pillow!!
